At Cherrytree Dental Care in Wantage, we can restore a heavily broken down tooth with a crown (you may know it as a cap). You are often used where it is not possible to restore a broken down tooth using more minimally invasive technique such as dental bonding or a white filling.
Your dentist will ensure you are completely numb and comfortable, they will then prepare the tooth for crown, this ensures that any decay is totally removed and that the new crown can fit over the top of your natural tooth, completely restoring it. Once the preparation has been done an impression will be taken, this is then sent to a dental technician who will create a mould on top of which they will make your new crown.
Whilst the technicians are making your new crown a temporary crown will be fitted to ensure the prepared to do is covered and that the ascetics are maintained.
2 weeks after you have the impression taken you will return to the surgery, you will be numbed again, the temporary crown will be removed and the final crown will be try again. This is your opportunity to have a look to ensure you are happy with the results, once you are completely happy the Crown will be permanently fitted using a special bonding resin.
Crowns can easily be made to:
Porcelain fused to metal. These types of crowns have been around for many decades now, they are some of the most commonly prescribed crowns. They have a high strength metal framework which has tooth coloured porcelain bonded to the outside. You won’t see the metal as it is on the inside of the Crown, but it’s there to provide support and strength for the whole restoration.
Metal free crowns. With the advent of modern technology it is possible to make a variety of metal free crowns. Some of these have high strength zirconia frameworks inside to support the porcelain, whilst others are made from high strength porcelain throughout. Metal free crowns can often look more athletic than porcelain fused to metal crowns as the light can transfer through them, this gives them an natural vibrancy and translucency.
Same-day dental crowns. In some situations we are able to make dental crowns in a single appointment, this then negates the need to have an impression, temporary crown and to wait 2 weeks for your final crown. Same-day crowns are made using the latest scanning 3-D CADCAM technology to digitise the process and mill your crowns in our milling machine.

“It was the first time I have been to a private dentist and your surgery. Things were very different from what I have been used to, so I was a bit unsure, but all my questions were answered when I asked. I was a bit overwhelmed”
